The Department of Physics offers courses leading to advanced degrees. The graduate program assumes thorough mastery of undergraduate physics, usually demonstrated by possession of a BA or BS in physics or a related field.
Enrollment Requirements
Under certain circumstances, however, undergraduates may enroll in graduate courses by meeting the following conditions. 1) Normally, the student will have already completed the core undergraduate courses* listed in the Physics BA program or equivalent. 2) If there is an undergraduate version of the graduate course, that version must be taken first. 3) If the graduate course has prerequisites, they must be met. 4) The average grade of the student in all previous physics courses must be A- or better.
When these conditions are met, the student will complete the Graduate Physics Course Registration Request Form, meet with the Director of Undergraduate Studies or the Undergraduate Advisor, and seek the permission from the instructor of the graduate course. Assuming space permits, the student will be allowed to register for the course.
*The physics BA core is taken to be:
- Physics I, II, III
- Dynamics
- Mathematical Physics
- Electricity and Magnetism
- Quantum Mechanics I
- Thermal and Statistical Physics
