10am-noon: The Conscious Id, the psychoanalytic process and the hard problem of consciousness.
Speaker: Mark Solms, Professor and Chair of Neuropsychology at the University of Cape Town. President of the South African Psychoanalytic Association. General editor, The Standard Edition of the Complete Psychological Works of Sigmund Freud (revised edition).
Commentator: Mathieu Arminjon, Senior Research Associate, School of Health Sciences (HESAV), University of Applied Sciences and Arts Western Switzerland (HES-SO), Lausanne. Dr Arminjon’s publications include Les Intentions Du Corps: Psychanalyse, psychologie et les sciences de l’esprit; and numerous articles on the philosophy of biology, psychiatry and psychoanalysis.
To facilitate discussion, participants are invited to read, in advance of the workshop, Dr Solms’s paper: “The Conscious Id” (Neuropsychoanalysis, 2013, 15 (1)), provided in advance of the workshop to all participants. Dr Solms will summarize the theses of this paper and develop some of their consequences for our understanding of the Freudian psychoanalytic process as well as broader issues in the philosophy of mind such as the “hard problem” of consciousness. Dr. Arminjon will provide comments. The second hour will be general discussion with all participants.
2-4pm: Memory Reconsolidation, the Freudian Unconscious, and psychoanalytic therapy.
Speaker: Cristina Alberini, Professor of Neuroscience, Center for Neural Science, New York University, Licensed Psychoanalyst (LP) Editor of the volume Memory Reconsolidation (Elsevier, 2013)
Commentator: Susanna Siegel, Professor of Philosophy, Harvard University. Dr Siegel’s publications include The Contents of Visual Experience, OUP 2010 and The Rationality of Perception, OUP 2017, as well as numerous articles on the roles of perception in the mind, including one on episodic memory.
To facilitate discussion, participants are invited to read, in advance of the workshop, Dr Alberini’s paper (co-authored with François Ansermet and Pierre Magistretti): “Memory Reconsolidation, Trace Reassociation and the Freudian Unconscious,” in Alberini (ed.), Memory Reconsolidation, provided in advance of the workshop to all participants. Dr Alberini will summarize the results of the paper and discuss their consequences for our understanding of the nature and scope of the psychoanalytic therapy.
4:30-6pm: Round table.
Moderator: Paolo Pecere, Professor of Philosophy, Roma Tre University. Author of numerous books and articles in the history and philosophy of science, focusing more recently on the history of the mind/brain problem. His book Brain, Consciousness, Cognition is forthcoming with Springer Verlag.
Speakers: Cristina Alberini, Mathieu Arminjon, Mark Solms, Susanna Siegel.
Professor Pecere will take stock of the day’s discussion, put it in historical context and moderate the discussion between speakers and all participants in the workshop.
The day’s workshop will be followed by a reception and dinner. All participants are invited.
