I am broadly interested in the intersection of science and technology studies and environmental histories of the Middle East. My past work examined modern temporal reform in Egypt at the turn of the twentieth century by comparing the conversion to mean time in Egypt’s urban spaces with the restructuring of seasonal or agricultural time effected by the construction of the Aswan low dam. As a doctoral student, I’m planning to focus my research around the environmental history of Cairo by investigating a set of construction projects and ensuing legal disputes surrounding the Daira Khassa properties in early twentieth century Egypt. I’m especially interested in what these disputes can tell us about the relationship between political power and built environments, the production of hybrid types of space, and the role that different kinds of workers played in creating these spaces.
