Q: Is there a specific sequence in which courses should be taken?
A: No. However, the course named “Language and Mind” is the flagship course of the major and should be taken as soon as possible, though this does not mean that students have to start with this course before they can take other courses in this major.
Q: Does the course "Language and Mind" have prerequisites?
A: "Language and Mind" is listed under the Linguistics Department offering (LING-UA 28) and as a Psychology Department offering (PSYCH-UA 27). If a student registers for it in the Linguistics Department, it has no prerequisites, but if a student registers for it as a Psychology course, it does have a prerequisite, due to the fact that it fulfills certain Psychology requirements. Therefore, if one does not need to register for it as a Psychology course, it is best to register under the Linguistics number, in which case the prerequisite issue will not arise.
Q: What are some courses in the major that have no prerequisites?
A: In addition to "Language and Mind," examples of entry-level courses without prerequisites are: "Sound and Language" from Linguistics, "Minds and Machines" from Philosophy or "Statistical Reasoning for the Behavioral Sciences" from Psychology.
Q: Is it possible to take "Cognition" without taking "Intro to Psychology?"
A: Students wishing to waive "Intro to Psychology" must request permission from Psychology Department Associate Director of Graduate and Undergraduate Studies, Andrew Hilford at ah13@nyu.edu.
Q: I have a question regarding a specific course. Who should I contact?
A: The contact person is Jaslynn Sendón. You can email her at js7707@nyu.edu.
Q: I have a question regarding a specific course offered by other departments. Who should I contact?
A: For questions about courses in Linguistics, contact Prof. Stephanie Harves at stephanie.harves@nyu.edu. For courses in Philosophy, contact Prof. Matt Mandelkern at mam1239@nyu.edu. For courses in Psychology, contact Prof. Alec Marantz at marantz@nyu.edu.
Q: I'm interested in taking a particular course, but I don't know if it's offered this semester. How do I find out when that course is offered?
A: Consult the course listings of the respective department.
Q: What do students do after they complete the major?
A: Because of the strongly inter-disciplinary character of the major, students can pursue a wide range of options for undertaking research-oriented graduate work in the fields of Linguistics, Psychology and Philosophy, while others go on to law or medical school. Majors who do not go on to graduate school often find careers in the computer and communications industries.
