Dissertation Fellowships (within NYU)

- Research
- Writing
For students who are in a research stage of their dissertation. Recipients of research fellowships are not obligated to complete their degree at the end of the fellowship term. Dissertation research fellowships include a stipend that reflects the GSAS minimum stipend for 2019-2020. In 2018-2019 the minimum stipend was $28,145. For students still within their MacCracken award term, the waiver of maintenance of matriculation fees, and 100% coverage in the NYU comprehensive health insurance plan for an individual will be covered under the terms of the MacCracken award. For non-MacCracken students as well as students beyond the term of their MacCracken award but still financial aid eligible, a waiver of maintenance of matriculation fees, and 100% coverage in the NYU comprehensive health insurance plan for an individual will also be included in the award. Lane Cooper Fellowship
One award is available to a GSAS student who intends to pursue a teaching career in history, literature, philosophy or classical and medieval languages. Research may concern any period up to and including, but not later than, the Renaissance. Departments in which eligible work is being conducted may nominate one student. Elaine Brody Fellowship for the Humanities
One award is available to a GSAS student in Arts and Science based humanities departments whose planned dissertation requires extended research abroad. The student should have completed all coursework, have an approved dissertation proposal, and be planning to travel abroad to complete his or her dissertation research. The project description should clearly indicate the need for extended research outside of the United States and its territories. Departments in which eligible work is being conducted may nominate one student. Recipients must submit a final progress report no later than three months after the project has been completed but before August 15 of the award year to the GSAS Office of Academic and Student Affairs. For students who are in a writing stage of their dissertation. It is expected that students receiving these awards will complete their dissertations and graduate at the end of the 2019-2020 academic year. Each dissertation writing fellowship includes a stipend that reflects the GSAS minimum stipend for 2019-2020. In 2018-2019 the minimum stipend was $28,145. The stipend for the Mellon Dissertation Fellowship and the Williamson Fellowship will reflect the GSAS minimum stipend for 2019-2020, with an additional $500 merit supplement. For students still within their MacCracken award term, the waiver of maintenance of matriculation fees, and 100% coverage in the NYU comprehensive health insurance plan for an individual will be covered under the terms of the MacCracken award. For non-MacCracken students as well as students beyond the term of their MacCracken award but still financial aid eligible, a waiver of maintenance of matriculation fees, and 100% coverage in the NYU comprehensive health insurance plan for an individual will also be included in the award. Dissertation Writing Fellowships are awarded only to students who have completed the full term of their MacCracken fellowship, including utilizing reserved funds. If you have questions about how to best coordinate reserved funds with a dissertation award, you should consult with your department. Exceptions will be considered for programs in which students typically complete the doctoral degree within five years.
Dean's Disseration Fellowship
Dean's Dissertation Fellowships are available to eligible GSAS doctoral students in all departments who will be entering the final year of writing their dissertations. Departments may nominate up to two students for this award. Students nominated but not selected for the named fellowships below will be designated as nominees for the Dean’s Dissertation Fellowship. Recipients must submit a final progress report before August 15 of the award year to the GSAS Office of Academic and Student Affairs. Visit their website for application and additional information.
James Arthur Fellowship
One award is available to a GSAS student whose dissertation concerns the measurement, meaning or conceptualizing of time. This could include current or past technologies, subjects
like cosmology, relativity theory, carbon dating, anthropological, psychological, historical, linguistic or literary perspectives, or many other areas of inquiry. Students who are nominated
but not selected for the James Arthur Fellowship will automatically be considered for the Dean’s Dissertation Fellowship. Recipients must submit a final progress report before August 15
of the award year to the GSAS Office of Academic and Student Affairs.

Humanities Research Fellowship, NYU Abu Dhabi Institute at NYU Abu Dhabi
One award is available for a GSAS student in the humanities to conduct advanced research or writing in residence at NYU Abu Dhabi. The successful candidate will join a community of
humanities fellows at the NYU Abu Dhabi Institute and will participate in the weekly Humanities Research Colloquium. Applications are especially encouraged from students engaged in research projects related to the strengths of the NYU Abu Dhabi humanities faculty, including the culture and history of the Arab world and surrounding regions. Recipients must submit a final progress report no later than three months after the project has been completed but before August 15 of the award year to the GSAS Office of Academic and Student Affairs. NYU Shanghai Graduate Fellowship
Two awards are available for GSAS students who have advanced to the dissertation stage (ABD)
to conduct advanced research or writing in residence at NYU Shanghai. The successful candidate will join an active community of scholars in the humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences, where interdisciplinary and cross‐fertilization is more the rule than the exception, and will be warmly encouraged to participate in weekly faculty seminars. Applications are especially encouraged from students engaged in research projects related to the strengths of the NYU Shanghai faculty, including by not limited to projects primarily focused on China and surrounding regions. Recipients must submit a final progress report no later than three months after the project has been completed but before August 15 of the award year to the GSAS Office of Academic and Student Affairs. Students applying for this award may also apply for Washington Square based fellowships in either research or writing.

Remarque Institute Fellowships
This is for doctoral students of Columbia University and New York University working in the areas of intellectual and cultural history who seek summer support. Deadline is usually March 1st before the summer for which you seek support.
Two fellowships are available every year for doctoral students who want to spend three months in research residency at the École Normale Supérieure in Paris whose topics concern Intellectual and cultural history. Graduate students fellows are provided with cost‐free, modest student housing within Paris, modest private office space at ENS, and round‐trip travel between New York and Paris. Doctoral student fellows at ENS will be encouraged to participate in seminars and colloquia during the course of their residency. You must have at minimum, an intermediate‐level command of the French language, though applicants certainly need not work on France or French topics.
In New York, the Remarque Institute will be able to offer up to four semester‐long fellowships for NYU doctoral students in any discipline who are completing dissertations on European and Transatlantic topics. These fellowships are non‐stipendary. Doctoral Students will be provided
with shared office space at the Remarque Institute for a semester and up to $1,500 in travel funds to support research. Applications and references must be postmarked or emailed to remarque.institute@nyu.edu no later than January 15, 2019.

INTERNAL DEPARTMENTAL DEADLINE: November 5, 2018

Each year the Humanities Initiative generally offers three Research Fellowships to graduate students in the humanities and art disciplines, including but not limited to history, art history, music, philosophy, cultural studies, literary and language studies, religious studies, drama and
performance studies, cinema studies, and gender studies. Fellows are expected to be present in New York within the University community for the entire year of their residency. They will meet on a weekly basis to discuss their work‐in‐progress and that of invited guests, and will participate in Initiative activities, including the planning of an annual humanities festival. Graduate Student Fellows receive a nine‐month stipend of $26,855, comprehensive health insurance, maintenance of matriculation and service fees, and a research award of $2,000. Students must be nominated by their department chair in consultation with their director of graduate studies. A department may nominate up to three applicants.
The Center for the Humanities is also sponsoring two Public Humanities Fellowships every year, which provides a stipend of $8,000, an additional $500 for travel and research, and allows the recipients to take part in the weekly life of the fellows’ community.
