Shai graduated from the MA International Relations Program in 2019. She is originally from Tel Aviv and grew up in Rockville, Maryland. Shai completed her bachelor's degree in Global Liberal Studies in Law, Ethics, and Religion at NYU.
Why did you choose the IR program at NYU?
My interest in International Relations was sparked early due to my transnational upbringing between the U.S. and Israel. As the daughter of a political journalist and news correspondent, I would often tag along with my father when he’d interview international leaders and politicians. Having completed my undergraduate studies at NYU, I knew that no other university could be better tailored for me in my pursuit of graduate studies. For these reasons, it was natural for me to pursue an MA in International Relations at NYU. I could not have dreamed, however, that I would have enjoyed this program as much as I have!
Which has been the class you most enjoyed? And the one in which you learned the most?
One of the classes I enjoyed the most was Professor Benaim’s “Speechwriting and Diplomacy” class. Not only did Professor Benaim consistently bring in top-notch speakers and give incredible lectures, but more importantly, he succeeded in creating a genuinely caring and supportive community out of a group of 15 strangers. Many of the people who were in that class with me have become my closest friends in the program!
The class where I felt that I learned the most was probably Professor Germano’s “Immigration and Transnationalism” class. I genuinely felt like my mind was blown after every session! That class also inspired my thesis topic, which focuses in-part on migrant children in Israel.
What advice would you give to future students of the program?
Take advantage of all the social events that the program offers! These two years are not just about all the books you read and the information you absorb, they’re about the incredible people who are on this journey with you! The International Relations and Politics Association (IRPA) organizes happy hours, movie nights, dinners, networking events, roundtable discussions/panels, and day-trips — go to all of them! Better yet, become a board member of the IRPA and help build a thriving, supportive, and caring community! I currently serve as the “Special Events Chair” of the IRPA, and it has been one of the most meaningful, worthwhile decisions I made during my time here!
What is your favorite place on campus? What do you like best about student life at NYU?
My favorite place on campus is, of course, Washington Square Park! There’s nothing better than taking a break between classes and catching some sun by the fountain, picnicking on the grass with friends, or just people-watching on one of the benches! Washington Square Park is always so full of life and energy, and it’s important to get some fresh air when you’re studying at Bobst Library all day and night!
What is the best thing about living in NYC?
The diversity of people, cultures, thoughts, and ideas! People come here from all over the world, and you are constantly learning from everyone you encounter.
What are your plans after you graduate? How has this program prepared you for that?
I am currently debating between a few different options.
