Ariela Garvett graduated from the BA/MA International Relations program in 2016. She grew up in New York, South Africa, and Seattle. As an NYU undergrad, she majored in Global Liberal Studies with Politics and Middle Eastern Studies minors.
Why did you choose the IR program at NYU?
NYU’s MAIR degree is a professional and distinguished program. I entered GSAS through an accelerated BA/MA track planning to start a career after graduation, so pursuing this specific Master’s was a pragmatic and easy decision.
Which has been the class you most enjoyed? And the one in which you learned the most?
Kara Alaimo’s Transnational Advocacy has been my most rewarding class in the program thus far. This course teaches theory but emphasizes real-world application. We spent most of the interactive seminar brainstorming campaign strategies. Skills developed in this course will be transferrable to work in almost any field.
What advice would you give to future students of the program?
As you figure out or if you enter the program already knowing what specific subject you want to concentrate in, actively seek out advisors, courses, and resources related to your areas of interest. Your experience in the program will be that much more enriching and will better prepare you for future academic and professional experiences.
