Shehzad Qazi is from Indianapolis, Indiana and graduated with an MA in International Relations in 2012.
Where do you currently work and what do you do there?
I work as the Managing Director at China Beige Book.
How did the IR Program prepare you for what you're doing now?
I studied International Relations with research and a writing heavy course load. I took classes on quantitative research methods as well that have helped me throughout my career.
What advice do you have for current students who may be looking for a career in your field?
Courseload should include a balance of classes focused on economics, research methods (quantitative and qualitative), and area studies, especially Asia. A combination of classes at the International Relations program and the Stern School of Business should be an asset.
Please share your internship experience as a MAIR student and any advice you have for students.
Look for internship or part-time work experience in roles that are financial sector focused or at companies involved in macroeconomic advisory and consulting.
During my time at NYU I became a Research Associate at a Washington, DC based think-tank and authored a series of policy briefs. I obtained the position by sharing my prior research experience with the organization, which included peer-reviewed articles I had published through funding provided by my undergraduate alma mater (IUPUI). I also worked for an NYU Politics Department professor on an NSF funded project which involved coding and database construction.
The think-tank role involved reaching out to organization myself. The part-time data coding role was obtained through job postings via Wasserman Center.
I recommend students use social media, e.g. LinkedIn, and NYU's career development services to search for internships. Students should also connect with the NYU Politics Alumni Association for opportunities and mentorship.
Which class did you most enjoy? And the one in which you learned the most?
Research seminar with George Downs (late) on the Politics of Human Rights.
What is your favorite place on campus? What do you like best about student life at NYU?
Bobst 5th floor lounge.
