Special Fall 2022 Course Note: We anticipate that all courses will hold classroom meetings and be fully in-person in Fall 2022. We are not offering any remote or hybrid courses this term.
Note: The course listings below are subject to change at any time. Courses are subject to sufficient student enrollment, need for course, and/or availability of classroom space. If canceled, enrolled students will be notified by the Program. Please notify ir.masters@nyu.edu if you see a discrepancy between the course listing below and Albert Course Search (but note that as a rule of thumb, the Albert listing details govern).
Available course descriptions are linked below. Unless otherwise noted, courses are 4 credit points.
Please note: Students may take any core course as an elective if they have satisfied the required core courses.
Continuing students: Please discuss your course plan with your faculty advisor before enrolling in classes. If you do not know who your IR faculty advisor is, please email ir.masters@nyu.edu to inquire.

GENERAL & CONCENTRATION ELECTIVES
MA in IR students have the option to complement their degree with an elective concentration. For students without an elective concentration, any approved concentration elective may count towards their general elective credits. Please see here for the list of electives and more information.
Please note that only NYU graduate-level courses may count towards the MA degree. Courses offered by other GSAS programs and NYU schools may require the permission of the instructor and/or the program offering the course. Please review the registration instructions on the program's web pages for more information.
Arthur L. Carter Journalism Institute
JOUR-GA 60.001 Writing for a Wide Audience
This course can substitute for the IR writing course requirement (Writing for International Affairs). Students should be aware of the 2 versus 4-credit discrepancy and the need to fulfill 40 credits for their IR degree.
Politics Courses
Graduate level courses offered by the Department of Politics.
Politics courses may count as general elective course credits. Please check with relevant websites for information and permission to enroll.
Area Studies Courses
The Program in International Relations encourages students to develop regional expertise. IR students have full access to graduate courses offered in the following departments. Please check the department websites for more information on their current course offerings. Regional and Area Studies courses fill 'general elective' requirements for the MA in International Relations.
Africana Studies
Graduate level courses offered by Africana Studies.
Asian Studies
Graduate level courses offered by East Asian Studies.
European Studies
Graduate level courses offered by the Center for European and Mediterranean Studies.
Israel Studies
Graduate level courses offered by Israel Studies.
Latin America and Caribbean Studies
Graduate level courses offered by the Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies.
Middle Eastern and Islamic Studies
Graduate level courses offered by Middle Eastern and Islamic Studies.
Russian and Slavic Studies
Graduate level courses offered by Russian and Slavic Studies.
NYU Law School
Approved International Law courses offered by the Law School.
Please note that the Law School Calendar differs from the University and that courses require a form with instructors' permission. MA in IR students adhere by the add/drop deadlines and refund schedule for the Graduate School of Arts and Science, and not those of the Law School. See the University Academic Calendar here.
Stern School of Business
Graduate-level courses offered by the Stern School of Business.
- Please note that the Stern Graduate course scheduling and registration differ from the Graduate School of Arts & Science, but MA in IR students must adhere to the add/drop deadlines and refund schedule for the Graduate School. The NYU GSAS add/drop deadline is often before the first classes are held at other schools such as Stern. Students who are enrolled in Stern courses should make sure to obtain syllabi and other materials to carefully evaluate courses due to differing add/drop deadlines. Please contact ir.masters@nyu.edu if you need any clarification on the add/drop deadline.
- Students may now search for Stern courses on Albert, but in order to get the exact courses that are open to non-Stern students, they should still use the course search on the Stern website.
- Please know that Stern professors DO NOT manage course enrollment, requisites, or the registration process. Stern professors cannot override closed or restricted courses, nor can they provide requisite waivers. Registration for Stern courses must be requested via your IR Faculty Advisers and not by students directly. Please review the NYU non-Stern student registration process here. Please submit the completed form to your supervisor on the day that the cross-registration period begins. As a reminder, if a student is using a prior degree to satisfy prerequisites, a copy of the transcript must be included with the cross-registration form. Requests without supporting documentation will be automatically denied.
- Stern will no longer be issuing permission codes. Instead, they will be entering student-specific permissions into the system. Once a student is approved for a course, advisors will notify the student to complete the registration in Albert. Students will only have 2 weeks from the date of approval to register for the course. Once the two weeks are up, the permission will expire. Stern will not be extending deadlines.
- Registration will be on a first-come, first-served basis. This means that even though students may have received approval for registration, they are not guaranteed a seat in the course. They will need to register as soon as possible to secure their seat. Students will now be able to drop courses directly in Albert without having to notify Stern.
Other Courses
The Program in International Relations encourages students to develop a regional and/or functional expertise and may take graduate-level courses from other NYU programs to satisfy 'general elective' requirements for the MA in International Relations. Please note that only NYU graduate-level courses may count towards the MA degree. Please check the department websites for more information on their current course offerings.
