Global Liberal Studies

In order to declare the Global Liberal Studies/History double major, you will have to declare your double major with GLS and then you must complete the Declaration of GLS/History Major Form for Global Liberal Studies/History and submit it to the Undergraduate Program Administrator in the History Department. 

• A minimum of 36 points in history (typically 9 courses) with a grade of C or better in each course. (No pass/fail courses may count towards the Major or Minor.)
• Workshop (HIST-UA 9XX).
• At least 5 advanced-level history courses (course # HIST-UA 100 or above).
• 1 course in each of the three geographic areas: US, European & Non-Western. 
• 2 Pre-1800 courses.
• 1 Capstone Seminar (HIST-UA 4XX).
• One course can count towards no more than 2 geographical or temporal requirements.
  
• Students can fulfill the geographical requirements at any course level.

To earn the double major, students must fulfill all requirements of each degree. However, a maximum of two courses from History may count toward GLS requirements with the following stipulations:

• GLS Students can use Global Works and Society GWA-UF 101 (previously Social Foundations I) to count for one of their history pre-1800 requirements and Global Works and Society GWC-UF 102 (previously Social Foundations II) for an intro European requirement.
• Any of the capstone seminars in the department of History will also count as meeting one of the GLS senior seminar requirements (note capstone seminars can be completed any year once the Workshop prerequisite is satisfied).
• Courses with a significant transnational content will also count toward meeting the GLS Advanced Global Topics requirement (usually completed while abroad during junior year). Examples of possible courses include HIST-UA 9745 Contemporary Latin American History, HIST-UA 9012 Modern Europe, HIST-UA 9452 Immigration, HIST-UA 9290 Comparative Fascism, HIST-UA 9510 French-African Relations, HIST-UA 9525 Orientalism, HIST-UA 9553 Historian of Palestinian-Israeli Conflict, HIST-UA 9570 History of West Africa, and HIST-UA 9091 Birth of Democracy in Europe. A list of approved history courses that satisfy the Other courses may be approved by mutual agreement from both departments.
• GLS Students interested in the double major are strongly encouraged to take the Workshop during their sophomore year.
