The Rae Dalven Prize is given for Outstanding Undergraduate Work in Byzantine Modern Greek Studies at New York University. The A.S. Onassis Program in Hellenic Studies requests submissions for the annual prize named in memory of the translator and critic Rae Dalven (1905-1992) to acknowledge excellence in modern Greek studies among undergraduate students at New York University. Students are asked to submit term papers written in classes that they have taken during the current academic year from the Program's course offerings or in courses university-wide that address topics related to the literature, history, and politics of Byzantine and Modern Greek culture and society.
Only one submission per student is allowed. Papers should not exceed fifteen, double-spaced, typed pages; they should be submitted in duplicate to the Alexander S. Onassis Program, 53 Washington Sq. S, Fl. 3W, New York, NY 10012 no later than March 31st, 2023 in an envelope marked RAE DALVEN PRIZE. The name of the prize's recipient will be announced soon thereafter and no later than April 30th. The award this year will be $250.
Rachel Dalven was born in Preveza, she came to the United States as a child and earned her Ph.D at New York University. Prior to her retirement she had been Professor of English Literature and department chair at Ladycliff College in Highland Falls, New York. Her translations included her anthology Modern Greek Poetry (1949; 1971); her acclaimed Complete Poems of Cavafy (1961) and Yannis Ritsos' The Fourth Dimension (1977). She also published articles on the Greek Jews and authored a play about Greek-Jewish immigrants. Her personal library was donated to the Alexander S. Onassis Program.
