Master's Programs (fall only admission)

Doctoral Programs (fall only admission)

- Joint PhD in Hebrew and Judaic Studies/History: January 4.

Required Application Materials
All applicants to the Graduate School of Arts and Science (GSAS) are required to submit a complete application for admission. A complete application includes the online application, academic transcripts, test scores, letters of recommendation, a résumé or curriculum vitae, a Statement of Academic Purpose, and the $110 application fee. Please refer to the Instructions section of the online application for full details. In addition, the Skirball Department of Hebrew & Judaic Studies specifically requires the following:
The GRE general test is required for all Ph.D. applicants. It is optional for applicants to the M.A. or M.P.A.-M.A. programs. See the GSAS test score FAQ for more information.
TOEFL or IELTS
Either the TOEFL or the IELTS is required of all applicants who are not native English speakers or who do not have a bachelor's or master's degree from an institution where the language of instruction is English. See the GSAS test score FAQ for more information.
Statement of Academic Purpose
In a concisely written statement, please describe your past and present work as it relates to your intended field of study, your educational objectives, and your career goals. In addition, please include your intellectual and professional reasons for choosing your field of study and why your studies/research can best be done at the Graduate School of Arts and Science and the Skirball Department of Hebrew & Judaic Studies at NYU. The statement should not exceed two double-spaced pages.
Personal History Statement (Optional)
Please use the Personal History Statement to tell us about any circumstances in your life that may have affected your academic record and about ways in which your personal background can contribute to the diversity of the department's student body. The Personal Statement is not meant to be a general autobiography.
Letters of Recommendation
3 Letters of Recommendation are required (at least 2 must be academic).
One (1) official academic transcript, mark sheet, or final grades sheet (and English translation, if required) from each institution you attended should be uploaded on one of the “Transcript Upload” pages as part of your online application. See the GSAS academic transcript FAQ for more information.
A writing sample of critical analysis is recommended. This may be a term paper, a conference paper, excerpt from a thesis or a published article. Writing samples should be double spaced, Times New Roman, 12 pt font, and should not exceed 6000 words.
Statement of Hebrew Proficiency (Ph.D. Applicants Only). Upload a one page, double spaced, description of proficiency in Hebrew and the sources from which is was acquired. Non-native speakers should please indicate:
1) the institutions at which they studied Hebrew;
2) the textbooks from which they studied;
3) the extent to which their program of study incorporated Biblical, classical, and modern Hebrew;
4) and the highest level achieved.
Native speakers should please indicate the years completed in Israeli schools and universities.
Autobiographical Statement in Hebrew (Optional; Ph.D. Applicants Only)
Applicants to any doctoral program in Hebrew and Judaic Studies may also, at their option, include an autobiographical statement in Hebrew, one page maximum. This statement should be hand-written personally by the applicant and should be saved as a pdf file and uploaded in the online application on one of the pages labeled "Additional Information." If it is not possible to save the autobiographical statement as a pdf, then please email it to the department at email@example.com. Be sure to include your name and date of birth.
