At the beach, bodies converge with the elements and strange treasures come to light. Departing from the conventional association of modernism with the city, this book makes a case for the coastal zone as a surprisingly generative setting for twentieth-century literature and art. An unruly and elusive confluence of human and more-than-human forces, the seashore is also a space of performance—a stage for loosely scripted, improvisatory forms of embodiment and togetherness.

The beach, Hannah Freed-Thall argues, was to the modernist imagination what mountains were to Romanticism: a space not merely of anthropogenic conquest but of vital elemental and creaturely connection. With an eye to the peripheries of capitalist leisure, Freed-Thall recasts familiar seaside practices—including tide-pooling, beachcombing, gambling, and sunbathing—as radical experiments in perception and sociability. Early Modern Écologies is the first collective volume to offer perspectives on the relationship between contemporary ecological thought and early modern French literature. If Descartes spoke of humans as being ‘masters and possessors of Nature’ in the seventeenth century, the writers taken up in this volume arguably demonstrated a more complex and urgent understanding of the human relationship to our shared planet. Opening up a rich archive of literary and non-literary texts produced by Montaigne and his contemporaries, this volume foregrounds not how ecocriticism renews our understanding of a literary corpus, but rather how that corpus causes us to re-think or to nuance contemporary eco-theory. The sparsely bilingual title (an acute accent on écologies) denotes the primary task at hand: to pluralize (i.e. de-Anglophone-ize) the Environmental Humanities. Exterranean concerns the extraction of stuff from the Earth, a process in which matter goes from being sub- to exterranean. By opening up a rich archive of nonmodern texts and images from across Europe, this work offers a bracing riposte to several critical trends in ecological thought. By shifting emphasis from emission to extraction, Usher reorients our perspective away from Earthrise-like globes and shows what is gained by opening the planet to depths within. The book thus maps the material and immaterial connections between the Earth from which we extract, the human and nonhuman agents of extraction, and the extracted matter with which we live daily. Eschewing the self-congratulatory claims of posthumanism, Usher instead elaborates a productive tension between the materially-situated homo of nonmodern humanism and the abstract and aggregated anthropos of the Anthropocene. L'effet de réel est le secret poétique de Villon, la clé de son art poétique qui consiste, en premier lieu, à nous faire croire qu'il n'y a pas d'art, que ce que nous lisons est vrai, qu'il n'y a pas de distance entre nous et la voix du poète.

  Les articles réunis ici invitent les lecteurs de Villon à interroger son art, à voir l'effet de réel à l'œuvre dans les poèmes, et à se demander comment l'art de Villon nous fait croire à son personnage et au monde qu'il représente.

Chaque article sonde un aspect de l'effet de réel. Après les questions de la représentation et la référence et du jeu des noms propres dans l'œuvre de Villon et la poésie de son temps (chap. 1-2), l’ordre du livre va de l'intérieur intime du langage et de la voix du poète (chap. 3-5) à la vision morale inspirée par la perspective du monde qui en résulte (chap. 6-7), puis au sens de sa mise en pages dans les manuscrits (chap.8-9) et enfin à la vie narrative du je poétique dans les récits inventés à partir des poèmes (chap. 10).

Dans la France du XIXe siècle, l'institution familiale se trouve dans une phase de transition historique, et dans une position à la fois triomphale et contestée. Avec l’avènement de la classe et des valeurs bourgeoises portées par la Révolution se répand le modèle domestique bourgeois ; les familles de type nobiliaire ou paysan, enracinées dans une terre et une tradition, prises dans un réseau de relations lignagères et communautaires, et placées sous l’autorité du père, reculent devant le ménage mobile, autonome, rassemblé par l’amour autour de la mère et des enfants, qui caractérise notre civilisation industrielle et urbaine. Ce livre interroge la façon dont les intellectuels du dix-neuvième siècle ont pensé la mutation de la famille, considérée dans son rôle de médiateur entre l’individuel et le social.

La première partie fait le point sur l’état de l’institution dans l’avant-dernier siècle, telle que nous pouvons la penser aujourd’hui. La famille est appréhendée en tant que maisonnée dans l’espace, et lignée dans le temps ; dans le jeu de ses alliances et l’enchaînement de ses filiations ; dans ses fonctions sexuelle, économique, autoritaire et, de plus en plus, sentimentale ; sans oublier les infractions qui tout ensemble contestent et confirment ses règles. La deuxième partie examine comment, de la Révolution à l’aube de la Troisième République, la famille a suscité chez les penseurs différents types de discours : des formules conservatrices qui se réclament du nom du Père et de la Tradition, patriarcalisme et phallocentrisme ; en antithèse, des formules de contestation qui opposent à la famille un utopisme totalitaire (focalisé sur la Cité), libertaire (recentré sur le moi) ou féministe(défenseur du sexe opprimé) ; enfin, des formules « progressistes » qui affirment les droits de l’individu, du citoyen et du cœur, paternalisme éclairé, réformisme libéral, et familialisme romantique.

Une telle étude apparaît d’autant plus opportune aujourd’hui que, un peu comme dans les décennies postrévolutionnaires, la famille est en pleine redéfinition, et se pense volontiers sur le mode de la crise.

On a day like any other, on a rafting trip down Utah's Green River, Stephane Gerson's eight-year-old son, Owen, drowned in a spot known as Disaster Falls. The figure of the dictator looms large in representations of postcolonial Africa. Since the late 1970s, writers, film-makers and theorists have sought to represent the realities of dictatorship without endorsing the colonialist clichés portraying Africans as incapable of self-government. Against the heavily politicized responses provoked by this dilemma, Bishop argues for a form of criticism that places the complexity of the reader’s or spectator’s experiences at the heart of its investigations. Ranging across literature, film and political theory, this study calls for a reengagement with notions – often seen as unwelcome diversions from political questions – such as referentiality, genre and aesthetics. But rather than pit 'political' approaches against formal and aesthetic procedures, the author presents new insights into the interplay of the political and the aesthetic.

Il se tourne ensuite, avec Balzac, les Goncourt et Zola, vers les atouts et les handicaps du familialisme bourgeois moderne, qui privilégie les préférences individuelles et l’alliance, point d’insertion de l’« autre ». Il examine l’utopie d’une rédemption fraternitaire proposée par George Sand et Eugène Sue, qui rêvent de faire de la famille la matrice de la cohabitation des classes et de la réconciliation des sexes. Il suit enfin, chez Edmond de Goncourt, Barbey d’Aurevilly et Elémir Bourges, la décadence des lignages et des maisonnées fin de siècle, dans lesquelles se brouillent délibérément les cartes. Convoquant de nombreux textes, fictionnels et non fictionnels, cet essai montre comment le roman répercute, repense, reconfigure l’institution, et participe ainsi à sa redéfinition.

Placé sous le signe de la formule horatienne « Concordia Discors », ce principe d’un univers formé de l’union harmonieuse d’éléments divergents – en apparence incompatibles – le 41e colloque de la North American Society for Seventeenth-Century French Literature a choisi de mettre en lumière les tensions génératrices du Grand Siècle et de questionner les principaux courants de la dix-septiémiste, tels qu’ils se sont développés de part et d’autre de l’Atlantique. Ce dialogue, riche en perspectives originales, qui répondait en outre à l’exigence d’interdisciplinarité que s’est toujours fixée la NASSCFL, a permis de réfléchir de manière dynamique aux forces qui ordonnent les contradictions du XVIIe siècle, et d’établir un rapport fructueux entre littérature, religion, musique, beaux-arts et pouvoir politique.

Les deux volumes de communications réunissent donc une diversité féconde de points de vues et d’approches méthodologiques, couvrant une large mosaïque thématique, située à tous les niveaux de la pratique littéraire, depuis sa genèse jusqu’à sa réception. La richesse et la variété des textes rassemblés nous invitent ainsi, en ces temps de crise littéraire, à poursuivre dans la voie de la « concorde discordante » et de l’esprit de syncrétisme où s’est distingué le Grand Siècle.

Le xviiie siècle appelle à détacher les bonnes idées des mauvaises, à séparer le bon grain de l'ivraie, et fantasme la concision d'un livre-bibliothèque. Quels enjeux se cachent sous ce désir d'épurer l'archive, de réduire le multiple au singulier d'un livre qui résumerait tous les autres?

The eighteenth century seeks to separate the good ideas from the bad, sort the wheat from the chaff, and dreams about the concision of a “book-library”. What motivates this desire to refine the archive and reduce the multiple to the singular in the form of a book which will summarise all others?

Guillevic wrote Geometries (Euclidiennes in French) in the early sixties, after his friend, the poet André Frenaud, recognizing in his poetry an inclination toward mathematics, and more specifically geometry, encouraged him to pursue this direction. Guillevic places a series of geometrical figures before our eyes, as they might appear in a schoolchild's primer, paired with poems that let us hear how these forms might speak. These talking circles, squares and angles—these articulations of space—are in turn meant to remind us of our own figures of speech. Guillevic's Geometries fits into the 1960s return to emblems, signs, and playful constraints both in art (Robert Indiana, Jasper Johns, Robert Rauschenberg and even Andy Warhol) and in writing (the Noigandres poets, Oulipo, Eugen Gomringer, the Robert Creeley of Pieces). But at the same time, the Euclidean world of forms here explored remains as timeless as the stones of Guillevic's own Carnac.

In the later Middle Ages, many writers claimed that prose is superior to verse as a vehicle of knowledge because it presents the truth in an unvarnished form, without the distortions of meter and rhyme. Beginning in the thirteenth century, works of verse narrative from the early Middle Ages were recast in prose, as if prose had become the literary norm. Instead of dying out, however, verse took on new vitality. In France verse texts were produced, in both French and Occitan, with the explicit intention of transmitting encyclopedic, political, philosophical, moral, historical, and other forms of knowledge.

In Knowing Poetry, Adrian Armstrong and Sarah Kay explore why and how verse continued to be used to transmit and shape knowledge in France. They cover the period between Jean de Meun's Roman de la rose (c. 1270) and the major work of Jean Bouchet, the last of the grands rhétoriqueurs (c. 1530). The authors find that the advent of prose led to a new relationship between poetry and knowledge in which poetry serves as a medium for serious reflection and self-reflection on subjectivity, embodiment, and time. They propose that three major works—the Roman de la rose, the Ovide moralisé, and Boethius' Consolation of Philosophy—form a single influential matrix linking poetry and intellectual inquiry, metaphysical insights, and eroticized knowledge. The trio of thought-world-contingency, poetically represented by Philosophy, Nature, and Fortune, grounds poetic exploration of reality, poetry, and community.

Le mouvement est considéré comme l'essence du cinéma. This newly revised and greatly expanded edition of Ezra Pound's Selected Poems is intended to articulate Pound for the twenty-first century. Gone are many of the "stale creampuffs" (as Pound called them) of the 1949 edition. Instead, new emphasis has been laid on the interpenetration of original composition and translation within Pound's career. New features of this edition include the complete "Homage to Sextus Propertius" in its original lineation, early translations from Cavalcanti, Heine, and the troubadours, as well as late translations of Sophocles, and the Confucian Odes. As a lifelong expatriate, Pound parceled out his work to a variety of journals in England, America, France, and Italy. This new edition takes account of this complex publishing history by giving the poems in the chronological order of their original magazine publication. We can observe Pound as he first emerged onto the literary scene in the pages of Ford Madox Ford's English Review and Harriet Monroe's Chicago-based Poetry, and then as an agent provocateur for the avant-garde Little Review, Blast, and The Dial. Unlike all previous selections, this volume provides annotation to all the early poems as well as a running commentary on the later Cantos – indispensable to any reader wanting to follow Pound on his epic odyssey through ancient China, medieval Provence, the Italian Renaissance, the early American Republic, and the darkness of the twentieth century. The editor, Richard Sieburth, provides a chronology of Pound's life, a new preface, and an informative afterword, "Selecting Pound." Also included in the appendix are T. S. We all know the name Nostradamus, but who was he really? Why did his predictions become so influential in Renaissance Europe and then keep resurfacing for nearly five centuries? And what does Nostradamus’s endurance in the West say about us and our own world?

The love songs of Occitan troubadours inspired a rich body of courtly lyric by poets working in neighboring languages. For Sarah Kay, these poets were nightingales, composing verse that is recognizable yet original. But troubadour poetry also circulated across Europe in a form that is less well known but was more transformative. Writers outside Occitania quoted troubadour songs word for word in their original language, then commented upon these excerpts as linguistic or poetic examples, as guides to conduct, and even as sources of theological insight. If troubadours and their poetic imitators were nightingales, these quotation artists were parrots, and their practices of excerption and repetition brought about changes in poetic subjectivity that would deeply affect the European canon.

The first sustained study of the medieval tradition of troubadour quotation, Parrots and Nightingales examines texts produced along the arc of the northern Mediterranean—from Catalonia through southern France to northern Italy—through the thirteenth century and the first half of the fourteenth. Featuring extensive appendices of over a thousand troubadour passages that have been quoted or anthologized, Parrots and Nightingales traces how quotations influenced the works of grammarians, short story writers, biographers, encyclopedists, and not least, other poets including Dante and Petrarch. First published as a sprawling feuilleton in the newspaper Le National in 1850, Les Faux Saulniers was political and topical. With nods to Diderot and Sterne, this protean digressive satire deals less with contraband salt smugglers and more with questions of subversion, transgression, censorship, and marginality. The Salt Smugglers is an unearthed pre-postmodern gem. By writing a first-person narrative detailing his dizzying quest for an elusive book holding the history of the Abbé de Bucquoy, Nerval was able to dance with the censors of the day who forbid fiction to appear in newspaper serials while questioning and opening the borders between fact and fiction.

Après les premières expériences, rares mais foisonnantes, du XVIe siècle, et après une éclipse de plus de cinquante ans, le théâtre des femmes prend son essor dans les années 1650. Des animatrices de salons, des poétesses, des romancières, une religieuse même voient leurs pièces publiées, recensées dans les grands journaux, jouées par des troupes professionnelles à l’Hôtel de Bourgogne, au théâtre du Marais, à la Cour…

Les neuf pièces rassemblées ici, qui s’échelonnent de 1655 à 1680, relèvent de tous les genres alors pratiqués : la comédie en un acte, la tragi-comédie, la comédie-ballet et la tragédie. Elles sont l’œuvre de la Lyonnaise Françoise Pascal, l’une des dramaturges les plus prolifiques, qui donne un nouveau souffle à la « petite comédie » ; de Mme de Villedieu, adulée dans les salons pour son esprit et ses vers, pensionnée par Louis XIV, qui questionne sans relâche l’histoire, la politique, les rôles de sexe, tout en adhérant aux nouveaux codes du classicisme ; de la sœur de La Chapelle, dont L’Illustre philosophe ou l’histoire de sainte Catherine d’Alexandrie montre une autre face du débat sur les femmes savantes ; d’Anne de La Roche-Guilhen, protestante réfugiée en Angleterre, qui fait jouer sa comédie-ballet devant Charles II ; et enfin de la célèbre poétesse Mme Deshoulières, qui sonne le glas de cette période lumineuse et galante avec une tragédie d’un pessimisme inédit.

Revenu en force dans les années 1660, le théâtre féminin se fraie de nouveaux chemins dans les quatre décennies qui chevauchent le changement de siècle. Dans le domaine de la comédie, Mlle Barbier renouvelle l’idéal de l’amour chevaleresque en accordant à la femme le droit de choisir son partenaire, alors que Mme Ulrich se moque du système aristocratique des mariages arrangés, qui ravale l’épouse au rang de commodité. Catherine Durand, enfin, écrivant des saynètes pour des théâtres privés, se libère du code des bienséances pour mettre en scène des situations scandaleuses et présenter des propos subversifs.

This co-written, multi-stranded book challenges assumptions about Chrétien as the author of a canon of works. In a series of lively exchanges, its five authors reassess the relationship between lyric and romance, between individuality and social conditions, and between psychology and medieval philosophy. The idea of "logical time" is used to open up such topics as adventure, memory, imagination, and textual variation. Recent research on Troyes and on the political agency of women leads to the reappraisal of subjectivity and gender. Throughout, the medieval texts associated with the name of Chrétien are highlighted as sites where thought emerges; the implications of this thought are historicized and further conceptualized with the help of recent theoretical works, including those of Lacan.

En 1992, suite à un long conflit entre la France et le Canada concernant la délimitation des eaux territoriales de Saint-Pierre et Miquelon, un tribunal international d'arbitrage siégeant à New York rend un verdict qui restreint les droits de pêche traditionnels et le "plateau continental" de l'archipel français. Ne lui est concédé qu'une étroite bande de mer (surnommée le "tuyau de poêle") qui met sa survie en péril.

Cette menace se profile dès l'ouverture du livre en ce mois de juillet 1988 où, revenu à Saint-Pierre pour l'enterrement de son père, l'auteur-narrateur a apporté avec lui le premier volume de L'Oeuvre des mers qui va paraître en métropole quelques semaines plus tard. Englobant deux autres séjours dans l'archipel (en 1995 pour le tournage d'un film et en 2005 pour l'enterrement de son frère cadet) ainsi qu'un journal posthume rédigé par Monsieur, l'ancien instituteur qui se prenait pour Jacques Cartier, Les Eaux territoriales prolonge L'Oeuvre des mers à la façon d'un Supplément.
Chronologiquement greffé aux volumes précédents, mais formant un tout en soi, Les Eaux territoriales incorpore au récit des épisodes liés à la réception de L'Oeuvre des mers et à sa genèse devenue une couche fertile de souvenirs. S'y multiplient des allusions littéraires dont le narrateur semble se faire un rempart dans le territoire de son enfance qu'il reconnaît de moins en moins.

Dans ce roman où il est tant question de titres, le démon rassembleur figure-t-il la force cohésive qui doit tant bien que mal faire tenir ensemble tant de personnages (humains ou non), d’objets hétéroclites et de mondes possibles ? Ce serait en somme Borman au travail. À moins que ce ne soit Borman lui-même (auteur, narrateur et personnage) qu’ait inventé, pour ainsi dire en amont du récit, le démon rassembleur – si, par exemple, le texte qu’on va lire était la fusion d’une série de nouvelles déjà écrites ?

Against World Literature: On the Politics of Untranslatability argues for a rethinking of comparative literature focusing on the problems that emerge when large-scale paradigms of literary studies ignore the politics of the “Untranslatable”—the realm of those words that are continually retranslated, mistranslated, transferred from language to language, or especially resistant to substitution.

In the place of “World Literature”—a dominant paradigm in the humanities, one grounded in market-driven notions of readability and universal appeal—Apter proposes a plurality of “world literatures” oriented around philosophical concepts and geopolitical pressure points. The history and theory of the language that constructs World Literature is critically examined with a special focus on Weltliteratur, literary world systems, narrative ecosystems, language borders and checkpoints, theologies of translation, and planetary devolution in a book set to revolutionize the discipline of comparative literature.

Epic Arts in Renaissance France studies the relationship between epic literature and other art forms such as painting, sculpture, and architecture. Why, the book asks, the epic heroes and themes so ubiquitous in French Renaissance art are widely celebrated whereas the same period's literary epics, frequently maligned, now go unread? To explore this paradox, the book investigates a number of epic building sites, i.e. specific situations in which literary epics either become the basis for realisations in other art forms or somehow contest or compete with them. Beginning with a detour about the appearance of epic heroes (Odysseus and Aeneas) on marriage chests in fifteenth-century Florence, the study traces how French communities of readers, writers, translators, and artists reinvent epic forms in their own—or their patron's—image. Following extended discussion of three galleries in different regions of France, which all depicted key scenes from the classical epics of Homer, Virgil, and Lucan, the book turns to epics written in the period. Chapters of Epic Arts focus on Etienne Dolet's Fata, which praise the victories (but also failures) of François Ier in ways that make it both a continuum of Fontainebleau and a response to the celebration of French defeat in foreign paintings; on Ronsard's Franciade, whose muse was depicted on the façade of the Louvre and whose story was eventually taken up in a long series of paintings by Toussaint Dubreuil; and on Agrippa d'Aubigné's Protestant Tragiques, which allude to, and frequently function as graffiti over, Catholic works of art in Paris and Rome. Situated at the frontier of literary criticism and art history, Epic Arts in Renaissance France is a compelling call for a revaluation of French epic literature and indeed of how we read.

This book examines how the last but one century, a period which saw the emergence of the “modern regime of historicity,” revisited its own past, by availing itself of the delight spiked with fear, the vicarious experiences, and the unique knowledge offered by fiction.

Focusing on songs by the troubadours and trouvères from the twelfth to the fourteenth centuries, Medieval Song from Aristotle to Opera contends that song is not best analyzed as "words plus music" but rather as a distinctive way of sounding words. Rather than situating them in their immediate period, Sarah Kay fruitfully listens for and traces crosscurrents between medieval French and Occitan songs and both earlier poetry and much later opera. Reflecting on a song's songlike quality—as, for example, the sound of light in the dawn sky, as breathed by beasts, as sirenlike in its perils—Kay reimagines the diversity of songs from this period, which include inset lyrics in medieval French narratives and the works of Guillaume de Machaut, as works that are as much desired and imagined as they are actually sung and heard.

Kay understands song in terms of breath, the constellations, the animal soul, and life itself. Her method also draws inspiration from opera, especially those that inventively recreate medieval song, arguing for a perspective on the manuscripts that transmit medieval song as instances of multimedia, quasi-operatic performances.

Medieval Song from Aristotle to Opera features a companion website hosting twenty-four audio or video recordings, realized by professional musicians specializing in early music, of pieces discussed in the book, together with performance scores, performance reflections, and translations of all recorded texts. These audiovisual materials represent an extension in practice of the research aims of the book—to better understand the sung dimension of medieval song.

Performative Polemic is the first literary historical study to analyze the “war of words” unleashed in the pamphlets denouncing Louis XIV’s absolute monarchy between 1667 and 1715. As conflict erupted between the French ruler and his political enemies, pamphlet writers across Europe penned scathing assaults on the Sun King’s bellicose impulses and expansionist policies. This book investigates how, at a crucial moment in which politics was enacted through praise literature and the spectacle of court ceremony, pamphlet writers challenged the monarchy’s monopoly over the performance of sovereignty by contesting the very mechanisms through which the Crown legitimized its authority at home and abroad.

In this volume, Kathrina Ann LaPorta offers a new conceptual framework for reading pamphlets as political interventions. Rather than viewing these polemical works as windows into the past, LaPorta asserts that an analysis of the pamphlet’s form is crucial to understanding how pamphleteers actively dialogued with the literary field to invest readers in political dissent. Even as pamphlets spread sedition, their authors seduced readers by capitalizing on existing markets in literature, legal writing, and journalism. Pamphlet writers appealed to the theatergoing public that would have been attending plays by Molière and Racine, as well as to readers of historical novels and periodicals. Whether they appropriated juridical language to indict absolutism, or usurped Louis XIV’s voice in fictive narratives mocking his impotence, pamphleteers entertained readers as they revealed the fault lines in the absolutist enterprise. In examining the endlessly creative ways in which pamphlets attacked the performative circuitry behind the curtain of monarchy, LaPorta offers a richer picture of the intersections between seventeenth-century literary culture and the clandestine world of pamphleteering.

Si la question des interactions entre le roman et les fictions brèves n’est pas propre au XIX^e siècle, elles se pose toutefois avec une particulière acuité à cette époque.
