As part of the centenary celebration of James Joyce's Ulysses, the Modern and Contemporary Colloquium (MACC) will host Professor Joseph Valente for a lecture entitled "Still Current After All These Years: Ulysses, #METOO, and the Trials of Leopold Bloom."
Joseph Valente is Distinguished Professor of English and Disability Studies at University at Buffalo. For decades, Valente has remained at the cutting edge of Irish Studies, while publishing several books and over 70 articles on topics which reached well beyond the Pale. He is the author of The Child Sex Scandal and Modern Irish Literature: Writing the Unspeakable (Indian University Press, 2020) and The Myth of Manliness in Irish Nationalist Culture, 1880-1922 (University of Illinois Press, 2011).
We are especially eager to hear him speak in a contemporaneous key on Joyce, who has been as integral to Valente's work as Valente's work has been to Joyce Studies and generations of scholars.
Please note that only NYU faculty, students, and staff may attend in-person events and must show the Daily Screener to gain entrance. This lecture will also be streamed on Zoom using this link.
