The Eighteenth Century British Literature Workshop is delighted to invite you to a conversation with Frances Ferguson to commemorate the 30th anniversary of her seminal essay, "Rape and the Rise of the Novel." Professor Ferguson is the author of several influential books and essays of literary criticism, including Pornography, the Theory: What Utilitarianism Did to Action (Chicago, 2005) and "Now It's Personal: D. A. Miller and Too-Close Reading" (Critical Inquiry, 2015). She is currently writing a book about the rise of mass education in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.
We are honored to have Professor Ferguson with us to discuss her groundbreaking essay and look forward to engaging her in a broader conversation about the relationship between literary study and rape culture.
The event will take place on Tuesday, October 17th from 5:30-7 p.m. in the Event Space at 244 Greene Street. As always, wine and refreshments will be provided. To RSVP and obtain a copy of the essay, contact Elizabeth at ehb254@nyu.edu by Friday, October 13th.
