The program for visiting scholars, visiting research professors, and visiting exchange professors extends specified courtesy titles and privileges to scholars of distinction who visit the Department of East Asian Studies at New York University in order to engage in research and scholarship, and in general scholarly and cultural interaction with a focus in East Asian Studies with our faculty and students. Visiting scholars are considered guests of the University and EAS, who may visit for a period of three months to a year.
The program is intended for scholars who hold academic appointments at other educational institutions that are on sabbatical leave to complete a research project. It is also for scholars in early stage of their career without an academic appointment, but whom hold an pre-doctoral ABD, but whom are sufficient proficient in their discipline and who is looking to engage in research and scholarly interaction with our faculty and students. The Department also welcomes scholars whom have no academic affiliation, but are highly regard in leading scholars in their field.
Visiting scholars are encourage to participate in colloquia, audit classes, consult members of the faculty, use University Libraries. As non-employees, visiting scholars should come with their own funding and are not entitled to salary, housing, office space or benefits other than those privileges cited above.
Applications are accepted year round, however, for priority consideration candidates should email their application by 1 May for visits starting in Fall Semester and 1 October for visits in Spring or Summer Semester. To apply, complete the visiting scholar application (PDF), questions 1-10, and provide a current CV and a cover letter detailing research interest and reason for the visit. Complete packet must be forwarded to East Asian Studies.
International Visiting Scholars
Prior to applying, if a foreign national, scholar must be able to prove financial support– the minimum amountrequired is $2,000 per month for personal living expenses (more if the scholar hasdependents). In addition, they should ensure that they will have health insurancecoverage during their stay at NYU.
