Each year, several students admitted to the program are named Writers in the Public Schools Fellows. The fellows conduct creative writing workshops for students in New York City public schools under the guidance of experienced teachers. The Fellowship provides full-tuition remission for two years; fellows also receive a generous stipends and NYU health insurance. No separate application is necessary to be considered for this fellowship. All applicants to the Creative Writing Program are considered and recipients are notified upon acceptance to the program.
In an effort to provide greater support to our Fellows teaching in the schools, we partner with Teachers & Writers Collaborative (T&W), a nonprofit organization founded in 1967 by New York writers and educators such as June Jordan, Anne Sexton, Grace Paley, Herb Kohl, and Kenneth Koch. T&W seeks to educate the imagination by offering innovative creative writing programs for New York City students and teachers, and by providing a variety of publications and resources to support learning through the literary arts. Each Writers in the Public Schools Fellow receives invaluable professional development training from T&W, as well as guidance and supervision from experienced public school teachers and administrators while they teach in the classroom during the fall and spring terms of the school year.
