Graduate Program Fellowships
All incoming students to the Creative Writing Program receive graduate fellowships that range from half-tuition remission to full-tuition remission with generous stipends.
Among others, full fellowships include The Axinn Foundation/E.L. Doctorow Fellowship in Fiction, The Axinn Foundation Fellowships in Creative Narrative Nonfiction, The Axinn Foundation/Catharine R. Stimpson Fellowship in Creative Narrative Nonfiction, The Wiley Birkhofer Fellowship, The Jim Brodey Fellowship, The Jill Davis Fellowship, The Fromer Fellowship, The Jan Gabrial Fellowship, and The Lillian Vernon Fellowship. Additionally, the Rona Jaffe Foundation Graduate Fellowship in Creative Writing is awarded annually to support one incoming female student.
A generous gift from the Axinn Foundation has established the Axinn Foundation Writer-in-Residence, awarded each year to a graduating student of exceptional promise. The fellowship is designed to provide emerging writers with time dedicated exclusively to writing, as well as invaluable guidance under an assigned faculty mentor during the final stages of writing and preparing a book for publication. The recipient is selected by a faculty committee and appointed as the Axinn Foundation Writer-in-Residence for the academic year following graduation. As Writer-in-Residence, the fellow also has the opportunity to teach one undergraduate class. The appointment carries a generous stipend and includes full benefits.
Teaching Opportunities
All graduate students are offered undergraduate teaching positions during their second year of study. Recipients of these positions design and teach a semester-long introductory course in creative writing for undergraduates and participate in a teaching practicum offered by the program. The current level of compensation for these positions is approximately $8,400 per course, subject to annual increases.
Literary Outreach Fellowships
The Creative Writing Program is committed to developing innovative literary outreach programs that enable students to teach creative writing in both traditional and non-traditional settings, focusing on underserved and marginalized communities. NYU's outreach initiatives serve as national models in the field. These vital programs are based in the belief that creative talent can flourish in even the most challenging circumstances. The outreach programs also enable students to train as teachers in the field, preparing them for teaching positions in schools and other professional settings upon graduation. Allocated upon admission to the program, the following fellowships provide full tuition-remission plus substantial stipends:
Goldwater Writing Workshop Fellowships
NYU Veterans Writing Workshop Fellowships
Starworks Fellowships
Writers in the Public Schools Fellowships
Global Research Initiatives Fellowships
NYU offers the unique opportunity for students to take advantage of the univeristy's global sites through the Global Research Initiatives Fellowship Program. GRI institutes have been established at NYU's sites in Athens, Berlin, Florence, London, Paris, Prague, Shanghai, Washington, D.C., and on the campus of Tel Aviv University. Graduate student fellows at GRI Research Institutes are given office space, modest administrative support, one round-trip, economy ticket from New York to the site (to be booked through the GRI program), and a flat-rate per-diem subsidy intended to partially defray living costs. As of fall 2016 the per diem rates for the Research Institutes are as follows: Athens, Berlin, Florence, London, Paris, Prague, Shanghai, and Tel Aviv are set at $75 per day; Washington, D.C. is set at $70 per day.
The Graduate School's Tuition Incentive Program (TIP)
GSAS encourages students to apply for external assistance and provides tuition support to recipients of external awards. Students receiving external awards of $13,000 or more from recognized, academic sources of funding outside of the University can apply for matching tuition points up to the amount of their outside award. Students receiving external awards of less than $13,000 may apply for matching tuition points up to 50 percent of the amount of the external award. TIP instructions and terms of the award are available online (Adobe Acrobat Reader required).
