Digital Humanities

Every day new forms of human knowledge are being digitized and converted into data. Knowing how to organize, visualize, and analyze textual, spatial, and qualitative data have become essential skills for those who seek to understand and to contribute to the body of human knowledge and expression.

The Advanced Certificate in Digital Humanities integrates the study of the liberal arts with the tools of computer science. The courses in the Advanced Certificate give students proficiency in Python, a popular programming language widely used in data visualization and analysis, in database tools essential for organizing and publishing large collections of digital materials, and in website design and development. All of our courses are project-based. There are no computer science prerequisites.

Students enrolled in the Comparative Literature Ph.D. program are eligible to pursue the certificate as a dual degree. Students funded through the MacCracken Fellowship pay no additional tuition or fees.

All students enrolled in the Comp Lit dual-degree must complete the following digital humanities courses:

• Introduction to Programming, CSCI-GA 1120 (4 points)
• Choose two of the following four courses (8 points total):
  • Programming Applications, CSCI-GA 1123
  • Web Development, CSCI-GA 1122
  • Working with Data, CSCI-GA 1121
  • Statistics: Understanding and Using Data, DHSS-GA 1100
• Approved Digital Humanities Electives (8 points)
  • Electives must be approved by the Director of the Program in Digital Humanities and Social Science, who can be contacted at dhss@nyu.edu

The certificate is a 20-point program, but 12 points (two approved digital humanities courses and any one of the core courses) will be double counted with the 72-point Comp Lit PhD; thus, the total dual degree will amount to 80 points.

Please note that Comp Lit PhD students can only pursue one certificate program during their studies.
