Please join us on Friday, April 20 at 6:30 pm at the NYU Jordan Center for the second round of our Departmental Movie Night! We will be screening Gianfranco Rosi’s 2016 Fire at Sea (Fuocoammare), winner of the Golden Bear at Berlin International Film Festival, which none other than Meryl Streep (!), chair of the jury, described as “a daring hybrid of captured footage and deliberate storytelling that allows us to consider what documentary can do.” Shot on the Sicilian island of Lampedusa during the European migrant crisis, the film takes a powerful if oblique look at the situation by focusing on a twelve-year old boy from a fishing family and a doctor who treats migrants upon their arrival. Current grad student Giancarlo Tursi will make a brief introduction, as will Professor Hala Halim, who recently discussed the film in a presentation at the 2017 ACLA annual meeting in Utrecht.
Pizza, frizzy water and other such refreshments will be provided.
Hope to see you there!
