Film and ruins have a similar relationship to time – both have an indexical link to the past, marking either an absent presence, or a present absence, recording traces of time. This project aims to explore the relationship between film and ruins, and the usefulness of the conceptual framework of the ruin in analyzing certain films. The works that will be focused on include Shub’s The Fall of the Romanov Dynasty, the ruined films of Eisenstein, and Tarkovsky’s Mirror.
