Independent Study Overview
Before the Semester Starts - students must submit an application no later than one week into the semester for which the independent study credit is being sought. The Director of Undergraduate Studies will review the proposal and, if it is approved, will email both the student and the student's academic advisor, who will be able to assist with getting the project officially registered.
During the Semester - students should continue to stay in touch with their P.I. and other mentors to make sure that they are keeping their commitment to the lab.
At the End of the Semester - students must write a final paper to be submitted to their PI and to the Neural Science Director of Undergraduate Studies. Once the final paper has been received and approved by the Director of Undergraduate Studies, the department will reach out to the PI, who will assign the student their final grade.
Restrictions

- Students are not permitted to receive more than 12 cumulative credits of independent study and/or internship total and no more than 8 credits total from any one department.
- Proposals to receive credit for work done in previous semesters will not be accepted.
- Students who are not Neural Science majors are not eligible to receive Neural Science Independent Study credit.
FAQS
- When will my application be reviewed? Applications will generally be reviewed within a few days of the deadline point of one week into the semester. They may be reviewed earlier if they are submitted before the deadline, but we can't guarantee it.
- I am continuing in the same lab as last semester. Do I need to submit another proposal? Yes. You need to apply for every semester you are seeking credit. You can include your original proposal in your new one, but you should also explain how far you have come in your project, any changes or new directions in your work, and your goals for the upcoming semester.
