Recently retired faculty member Ronald Callahan passed away in May 2022. Department Chair Mark Tuckerman shared these words in memory of Ron:
Ron served the Chemistry Department for 30 years as a clinical professor of organic chemistry, which included training provided to nursing students. Ron earned his PhD from our Department in 1989 working under the mentorship of Graham Underwood. For his teaching excellence, Ron was recognized with numerous teaching awards, including the Golden Dozen award in 2004. Those of us who knew Ron will remember his incredibly kind and sweet demeanor and his jovial personality. These are traits also noted and appreciated by the students who had him as an instructor and who TA'd for him, and this is certainly how I will remember him. Ron had just retired from his position at NYU one year ago in August of 2021, and if I may paraphrase a colleague's comments, it's a shame he didn't have more time to enjoy his retirement. I know many of us missed Ron's presence in the department this last academic year, and I know he will be missed even more now that he's gone.
Our condolences go out to Ron's family and friends. and we are grateful for the legacy he left behind in generations of young chemists and nurses.
