The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has awarded NYU Chemistry Associate Professor Tianning Diao funding for research on “upcycling” poly(acrylic acid), a plastic component commonly used in household products. A form of recycling, “upcycling” turns waste into a material that is of higher value or quality. Diao's group is one of 10 international government and academic laboratories selected as part of this $25 million project.

Diao's 3-year $600,000 grant will allow her group to pursue the goal of reducing waste generated by disposable diapers, among other widely-used products. Congratulations to Tianning!
