Gertrude Elion (1918-1999) earned her masters degree in Chemistry from NYU in 1941. She had to study at night and on weekends, and was the only woman in her class. She went on to win the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1988. Her visionary research in antiviral drugs, and the direct path to potential treatments of the coronavirus, is highlighted in National Geographic.
