"Nanothreads from Polymerized Aromatic Molecules."
John V. Badding from Penn state University will deliver a seminar entitled, "Nanothreads from Polymerized Aromatic Molecules." Hosted by Dirk Trauner.
There are millions of organic molecules, but few examples of carbon molecules or nanomaterials such as nanotubes or graphene with extended bonding exist. Prof. Badding will discuss the mission of the new NSF Center for Chemical Innovation, the Center for Nanothread Chemistry (CNC;https://cci.chem.psu.edu), which includes Prof. Trauner. This mission is to define the chemistry to synthesize a new class of organic molecules that have pervasive covalent bond connectivity in multiple dimensions. It is inspired by their discovery that solid, polycrystalline molecular benzene as well as heteroaromatic and functionalized aromatic molecules can polymerize and assemble upon compression into hexagonal crystals of one-dimensional carbon nanothreads with tetrahedral sp 3 bonding.
