The Laboratory for Molecular Nanoscience (LMN) is the newest addition to the growing Chemistry program at NYU.
When completed, the Laboratory will consist of 20,000 gross square feet of space on the 7th floor of the Silver Center. It will accommodate up to six full-time faculty members whose offices face Washington Place and Waverly Place that have respective southern and northern exposure to the vibrant cityscape and the historic architecture of Greenwich Village and the Washington Square community. In order to promote fruitful collaborations and opportunities for learning two additional offices on the north side of LMN will be provided for guests from other universities and research centers.
Desks for 56 students are arranged in four-person carrels along the west side of the building overlooking Washington Square Park with its rich architecture and beautiful landscape. The vista beyond the park reveals a stretch of the Hudson River and the shoreline of New Jersey. Midway along the series of carrels a lounge/meeting space is located with seating and tables for small group discussions, casual reading, or light meals. Across from the lounge is a counter, sink, and microwave oven. This space has a retractable screen that is paired with a projector in the lounge. Two additional informal seating stations are provided for students in the northwest and southwest areas of the lab.
Near the tastefully designed reception area at the entrance to the LMN there is a state of the art conference room with projection equipment and flat screen display for large conferences and presentations. The seating in this facility is flexible. A conference table with twelve chairs is the standard configuration. The table can be stowed to allow for the use of forty chairs when required for larger presentations.
The research area of the laboratory houses 16 hoods, 336 linear feet of bench workspace, and 60 linear feet of bench space for instrumentation. Work areas include 3 laser/instrumentation labs, an NMR lab, an instrumentation facility where two SEM instruments are housed, a tissue culture facility, and dry chemical and solvent storage.
The design of the LMN has benefited from design evolution in recently completed premier workspace in the Laboratory of Molecular Recognition and Synthesis on the 3rd floor of the Brown Building, the Molecular Design Institute on the 5th and 6th floors of the Brown Building, the Biomedical Chemistry Institute on the 8th floor of Silver, the Structural DNA Nanotechnology Facility on the 10th floor of the Waverly Building. Each renovation has substantially improved laboratory functionality and the working environment while stimulating collaborative research. The LMN will take its place as the latest in modern research facility design and reinforce the reputation of NYU Chemistry as a leader in nanoscience.
