We are pleased to announce the Janice Cutler Symposium on Undergraduate Science Education, to be held on March 1, 2013 from 1:00-6:00 p.m. at the New York Academy of Sciences. This event, presented by the NYU Center for Teaching Excellence, honors Dr. Janice Cutler, who passed away on November 20, 2012 at the age of 94. Janice Cutler had a long and deep connection to the New York University Department of Chemistry. Dr. Cutler was an alumna, having earned her Ph.D in physical chemistry from NYU in 1946. After working in industry, she returned to New York University in 1966 to develop an innovative science curriculum called the Conceptually Oriented Program in Elementary Science (COPES). She began teaching in the Department of Chemistry in 1972, and in the Eighties, she worked in the College of Arts and Science Dean's office on Academic Standards and Pre-Medical Advising. In 1988, she was appointed Director of Undergraduate Studies for Chemistry, where she advised students for 20 years, until her retirement only a few years ago. Janice Cutler was an impressive person (and how could a woman earning a doctorate in science in 1946 not be!) and she played an integral role in this department for much of her long life.
