NYU Chemistry alumnus Neil Garg, currently Professor in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry and Vice Chair for Education at UCLA, recently presented a TED Talk about chemistry education. The title is "Challenge Your Perceptions," and that is the focus of Neil's talk. His goal as an educator is to fight the negative perception most students (and people) have against organic chemistry, causing intimidation by the subject to get in the way of learning.
Neil earned his bachelor's degree in chemistry at NYU in 2000. As an undergraduate, he conducted chemistry research under the direction of Professor Marc Walters. In this presentation, Neil takes a moment to graciously acknowledge Marc, and also retired Professor Yorke Rhodes, for their support and the influence they had on his life as both a student and teacher of chemistry.
The TED Talk blurb on YouTube:
Shots of tequila? Chemistry music videos? Neil Garg, an innovative Professor at UCLA, tells us about his educational initiatives that have transformed the scariest of all subjects - organic chemistry - into one of UCLA’s most popular courses. Garg’s TEDxUCLA talk will restore your faith in science education and inspire you to challenge your perceptions.
