"High Data Rate Macromolecular Crystallography for Large Numbers of Small Crystals at the Micro-Focusing Beamlines at NSLS-II"
AMX (Highly Automated Macromolecular Crystallography) and FMX (Frontier Microfocusing Macromolecular Crystallography) are the core beamlines of the life science macromolecular crystallography effort at NSLS-II. AMX and FMX have overlapping capabilities with AMX optimized for high data rate experiments. At AMX we routinely collect diffraction data on protein crystals as small as 5 microns in the longest dimension using a bright beam and large area detector running at 200 Hz. Using these facilities, we can now collect data from up to few hundreds single crystals in 1/2 day for any Structural Biology projects including the most challenging GPCR complexes and ribosome samples. These high data rates require carefully tuned processing and data management software moving large numbers of images among multiple cores in a large multi-node cluster to deliver near real time feedback.
