Konstantine Tchourine from the Vogel and Bonneau labs has published a computational study in Molecular BioSystems with a team of co-workers. Tchourine showed that a simple two-parameter differential equation models dynamic protein expression levels under various stresses by inferring protein synthesis and degradation rates. Dynamic protein levels of approximately one-third of the tested genes were predicted with a high accuracy from the corresponding mRNA levels using the parameters inferred by the model. Furthermore, it was revealed that most genes follow one of two mutually-exclusive modes of regulation, which we term synthesis- and degradation-dependent. The paper can be accessed here.
