NYU President John Sexton officially dedicated the new Irene Rose Sohn Zegar Memorial Greenhouse at the NYU Center for Genomics and Systems Biology on Wednesday October 17th, 2012. The ceremony featured an inaugural lecture by Dr. Jane Silverthorne, Division Director, Directorate for Biological Sciences / Integrative Organismal Systems at the National Science Foundation. IOS supports research aimed at improving our understanding of organisms as integrated units of biological organization.
Charles and Merryl Zegar along with Irene's niece Stefanie Sohn Jackson touchingly spoke to the gathered guests, family and friends of Irene's zest for life and her commitment to making life better for others in her role as a social worker. Irene Rose Sohn Zegar wife of Charles and mother of Scott died in 1999.
CGSB Co-directors Fabio Piano and Michael Purugganan, Professors Kenneth Birnbaum and Gloria Coruzzi delivered overviews of the research being conducted and thanked the Zegar Family, John Sexton and NYU Leadership, and Debra LaMorte for their generous gift and continuing support of the Center for Genomics and Systems Biology.
