Best Practices for Enhancing Rigor and Reproducibility in Research

NYU Biology has established guidelines for enhancing rigor and reproducibility in research that follow and expand on the NIH’s Rigor and Reproducibility recommendations. Our Best Practices For Enhancing Rigor and Reproducibility in Research focus on the following key areas:

  1. Assessing the scientific premise of the proposed research
  2. Rigorous experimental design for robust and unbiased results
  3. Consideration of relevant biological variables
  4. Authentication of key biological and/or chemical resources
  5. Data availability and material sharing
  6. Transparency in reporting

These guidelines are provided to all trainees through the NYU Biology PhD website. Moreover, the guidelines are provided and reinforced in courses that address research practices, e.g. "The Art of Scientific Investigation."

Responsible Conduct of Research Training

We regard training in Responsible Conduct of Research (RCR) to be an essential component of PhD training. As such, we provide training in RCR at the earliest possible stage. All PhD students are required to complete RCR training by the completion of their second year.

Individual Development Plan (IDP)

An individual development plan (IDP) is a tool to assist PhD Students in career and personal development. Its primary purpose is to help PhD Students explore career possibilities and reach short and long-term career goals, as well as improve current performance. An IDP is not a performance evaluation tool or a one-time activity. It should be looked at like a partnership between the PhD Students and their mentor. It involves preparation and continuous feedback.

The following templates serve as a guide for faculty to develop an Individual Development Plan (IDP) that fits their team members’ needs best. IDPs should be completed at least once a year.
