While ethnography––literally “to write” (grapho) “people” (ethnos)––has become synonymous with anthropology, it signifies a range research methodologies widely used within the social sciences.  The course considers discussions and debates about ethnographic research, ethics, and representation within the social sciences and beyond.  The readings survey ethnographic theory and practice through a number of conceptual and methodological domains, including the problems they raise.  Course topics are: objectivity, critiques of representation, participant-observation, cultural relativism, ethno-history, archives, conflict, interpretation and discourse analysis, verifiability, and life histories.
