Settlement Geography of the Punjab during the Early Historic and Medieval Periods: a GIS approach

Mark A. Smith works for the Mandatory Center of Expertise for the Curation and Management of Archaeological Collections (MCX-CMAC), St. Louis District, U. S. Army Corps of Engineers. His dissertation topic was an examination of evolving settlement patterns and physical landscape in the Punjab, Pakistan from Early Historic through Medieval periods. His methodological specialization is the application of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to cultural heritage projects, quantitative geography and archaeological landscape analysis. Working in the Cultural Resource Management industry, Dr. Smith managed projects in the Eastern and Southeastern United States. He has also conducted archaeological fieldwork in Turkey, Cypress, Jordan, Iraq and Pakistan. Additionally, he served as Field Director and GIS Coordinator for the Regime Crimes Liaison Office’s Mass Grave Investigations Team, providing forensic assistance for Iraqi High Tribunal investigations of the Anfal Campaign (1988) and suppression of the Intifada (1991) conducted against the Kurdish and Shiite populations respectively.
