The Department of Anthropology at New York University invites applications for a tenure-track appointment in Archaeology at the level of Assistant Professor. The appointment will begin September 1, 2024, subject to administrative and budgetary approval.
The department seeks scholars with exceptional records in the research and teaching of archaeological science and who take a big-picture approach to studies of human-environment interactions in the Holocene and later Pleistocene records. We seek individuals who have a theoretical outlook rooted in evolutionary theory as applied to the archaeology of sociopolitical complexity in societies of any scale, from hunter-gatherers to large urban empires, and who complement the research of existing faculty (Late Pleistocene of Central Eurasia and Africa; animal domestication in Europe and the Near East). Regional specialty is open. We are especially interested in candidates with ongoing field- and lab-based projects. Possible specializations include but are not restricted to geoarchaeology, archaeobotany, ceramics, bioarchaeology, computer and mathematical modeling, and spatial analysis. The successful candidate will be affiliated with the university’s Center for the Study of Human Origins (CSHO). They will help shape the department’s Anthropological Sciences strategic plan along two main research tracks: ecosystem engineering and the emergence of complex social organization.
The successful candidate will hold a Ph.D. in Anthropology or a related discipline at the time of appointment. They will demonstrate an ongoing commitment to academic and pedagogical inclusive excellence in support of the department’s programs. At the undergraduate level, they will be expected to teach introductory courses, as well as more advanced courses in areas of their expertise. At the graduate level, they will be expected to teach courses in their area of expertise as well as supervise students in the M.S. and Ph.D. programs in Anthropology. In compliance with NYC’s Pay Transparency Act, the annual base salary range for this position is $90,000 – $140,000. New York University considers factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the candidate’s work experience, education/training, key skills, internal peer equity, as well as market and organizational considerations when extending an offer.
