There is a considerable debate today on the nature of emotions, for instance, whether they are innate and universal or socially constructed, and to what extent emotion terms in different languages overlap or coincide. “Emotion” itself, however, is largely taken for granted as a distinct faculty. But is it, or was it, always so? In this second conference on “Before Emotion,” we raise this question in relation to six classical languages: Hittite, Egyptian, Mayan, Japanese, Sumerian and Akkadian. The results promise to offer further perspectives on emotion that will be of interest to psychologists, neuro-scientists, philosophers, anthropologists, historians, and more.
