Thank you for your interest in writing with us this summer. Since all NYU Summer 2020 courses will be held remotely, we’re pleased to offer the virtual NYU Summer Writing Intensive in place of our previously scheduled programs (Writers in New York, Writers in Florence, and Writers in Paris). This dynamic and robust online program will offer 8 credits in 4 weeks and feature NYU’s world-class faculty and a stellar line-up of visiting writers and editors.
Students may enroll in Session I (June 1–June 25, 2020) or Session II (June 29–July 23, 2020), or in both sessions. Each student will take a Writing Workshop and a Craft Seminar in either fiction, poetry, or creative nonfiction. Courses are small, to allow for personalized attention and an immersive experience. Your professors will offer ample time each week for one-on-one meetings to discuss student work. The faculty includes Catherine Barnett, Nathan Englander, Jonathan Safran Foer, John Freeman, Katie Kitamura, Hari Kunzru, Robin Coste Lewis, Meghan O’Rourke, Matthew Rohrer, Helen Schulman, Irini Spanidou, and Darin Strauss.
Evening colloquia will include an exciting array of virtual events, including readings with renowned authors, including Zadie Smith, Nick Laird, Terrance Hayes, Maggie Nelson, and Joyce Carol Oates; publishing panels; conversations between writers about their craft and more. Most events will include question and answer sessions, allowing students direct contact with some of the finest writers and editors working today. Evening colloquia will also include one-on-one consultations with authors, editors, and other publishing professionals.
Although we regret not being able to meet you in person, we're pleased to be able to offer this opportunity to (virtually) gather as a community of writers, to read and write daily, to learn from NYU's renowned faculty members, and to meet visiting writers and editors for insight and advice about craft and the writer's life. NYU students enrolled in one session will complete half of the Creative Writing Minor in 4 weeks. NYU students enrolled in two sessions will complete the entire Minor in 8 weeks.
How to Apply
If you are an NYU student, or if you have already submitted the Summer Abroad Programs application (for Writers in Paris or Writers in Florence), and have submitted the Visiting Student Application and received a response assigning you an N Number, please skip to step 3.
Please fill out the Visiting Student Application. Information about the Application is here, and the Application itself is here. The Visiting Student Application deadline for Summer Session I is May 12. The Visiting Student Application deadline for Summer Session II is June 15. Please note that the University Programs Office recommends that students upload a transcript as part of the application or submit it shortly after, as they only review applications once they are complete and all supplemental materials have been submitted.
If you are an NYU student or a non-NYU student who has been accepted to NYU via the Visiting Student Application or the Summer Abroad Programs Application, please write summer.writing@nyu.edu to register.
