Universal laws of gene expression in growing cells
Many experiments have shown that mRNA and protein copy numbers are often proportional to the cell volume in growing cells. However, current models of gene expression based on the assumption that genes and mRNAs are limiting for transcription and translation are incompatible with these observations. I will present a minimal gene expression model to capture the linear scaling between protein, mRNA and cell volume in growing cells. Notably, the model predicts that the exponential growth of cell volume can be violated as the volume-to-DNA ratio reaches a critical value, which has recently been experimentally observed.
