Hey! My name is Nicole Hohmann, I am the new (virtual) Cultural Program Intern at Deutsches Haus at NYU. I am doing my master’s degree in Theory and Practice of Professional Writing and English Studies at the University of Cologne. I grew up in Aachen, near the Belgian and Dutch border – which not only meant that I thought IKEA was a Dutch company for most of my life, but it also meant that intercultural exchange was part of daily life: whether it be through eating Frikandel (a Dutch and Belgian snack of minced-meat hot dog) at the border, or visiting friends from school who basically lived in another country. When I started studying at the University of Cologne, I focused on German and English literature, explored the publishing world, and read as much as I could.
What the pandemic has made painfully obvious to me is the importance of all forms of culture and events that promote critical thinking and cultural exchange. I love that Deutsches Haus at NYU continues to host events virtually and I am happy to help with this programming during my internship.
See you all (virtually)!
