My name is Layla and I am the new intern in the Cultural Program at Deutsches Haus at NYU.
I am from Freiburg, a city in South West Germany which is closely situated to the French and the Swiss border. Freiburg is a popular university town that is also well known for being the entry point to the Black Forest.
I really like travelling and exploring different cultures, languages and customs. After my Abitur I was an Au Pair in London and completed my BA in English Literature and History in England. The joint honors degree allowed me to get a broad overview of historical development, linguistics and literature in historical, social and cultural contexts. It also gave me the chance to go on field trips in Berlin, London and Venice. Living in a different country for almost four years was a very valuable experience for me.
I am currently completing my MA in “British and North American Cultural Studies” at Freiburg University. Since the program is conducted in English many international students take part in it. We always have lively discussions in the seminars and learn from different cultural viewpoints. The classes range from cultural studies to literary and film studies.
While I mainly focused on British studies in my undergraduate studies, I am focusing on North America, especially in my Master thesis.
Thus, it is a great and very enriching opportunity for me to live in New York for three months and to be able to explore the cosmopolitan city. I look forward to being a part of Deutsches Haus at NYU as an intern and to working with the nice team. I am excited about participating, and helping to organize and promote the upcoming events in the summer and the fall.
