Raziel Abelson

Professor Emeritus of Philosophy

Raziel Abelson (MA Chicago 1950, PhD NYU 1960) was a member of the Department from 1960 until his retirement in 1990. He was the author or editor of six books, including Persons (Macmillan 1977), Lawless Mind (Temple UP 1988), and Common Sense Morality (Global Scholarly Publications 2015). Ethics for Modern Life, edited jointly with  Marie-Louise Friquegnon (St Martin's Press 1975) is now in its sixth edition. Until its closure in 1973 due to a financial crisis in the wider university, he was Chair of the Philosophy Department at NYU's University Heights campus in the Bronx, where he helped create a climate which nurtured various young philosophers who went on to do significant work.
