Greek Literature

In this course, we will read a broad selection of ancient Greek prose works, including oratory, historiography, philosophy, biography, the novel, and Christian apologetics. All texts are drawn from the reading list. Classes will focus on close reading of select passages, so as to develop familiarity with the wide range of styles and genres. Attention will also be paid to social context, and a review of the most important scholarship on each author.

Texts are studied in chronological sequence, and major themes of Greek cultural and intellectual history such as the rise of the polis are explored. Readings range from Homer to Thucydides and include both major and minor authors.
