Intro to Sociology

NOT OPEN TO PRECOLLEGE STUDENTS. Why do *those people* do *that*? What are *they* thinking? Why don't we do *that* anymore? If you've ever found yourself asking these questions, you've entered the terrain of sociology. Sociology is about what people do, how they do it, what the consequences are, and maybe even how things could be done differently. But it's also about how we come up with ideas like "those people," "those other people," and "people like us." This class introduces you to sociology by looking at how sociologists have understood important social categories—that is, general ways that have been used to distinguish certain people from others. Three categories will be our principle focus: race, class, and gender. Using classic and contemporary sociological works, we'll look at how these categories have been conceptualized, investigated, and fought over. We'll also ask how race, class, gender, and other social categories are related to one another, which gets us to the heart of many of our most hotly debated issues in the United States today. And we'll see what tools the discipline of sociology offers to study these categories empirically.

Offered every semester. 4 points. Survey of the field of sociology: its basic concepts, theories, and research orientation. Threshold course that provides the student with insights into the social factors in human life. Topics include social interaction, socialization, culture, social structure, stratification, political power, deviance, social institutions, and social change.
