Welcome to the NYU Department of Sociology!
Please review the information below to assist you with becoming a Sociology Major at NYU.
Transfer Course Equivalencies
Once you are a student at NYU, an initial Transfer Credit Report will be generated and can be accessed via NYU Albert, our web-accessible registration system. All transfer credits will be listed as tentative until your final High School and College transcripts are received by NYU.
In order to receive SOC-UA course credit, the Sociology Department must determine if the course(s) you took at your previous institution(s) are equivalent to our courses here at NYU. To check your transfer course equivalencies, please contact Sharice Burroughs, Academic Administrator at: email@example.com and attach a copy of your unofficial transcript(s) with all previous sociology course syllabi. Each course will be reviewed for equivalency by the Director of Undergraduate Studies.
All transfer students who plan on majoring or minoring in Sociology must complete these steps:
Students transferring into the Sociology major should plan to meet with Sharice Burroughs, the Academic Administrator to acquaint themselves with the requirements of the major, possible study-abroad opportunities, course sequences, and any potential academic issues that may arise.
Where relevant, students should meet with Professor Jeff Goodwin, Director of Undergraduate Studies to discuss their post-graduation plans.
For any other transfer courses, you should reach out to the corresponding departments for them to review or reach out to your CAS Advisor.
The Sociology Major requires 9 courses, only 4 courses can be completed with transfer credits. If you happen to have more than half of the major credits equivalent from transfer courses, you may be able to use them for placement/prerequisite purposes and possibly towards your 128 graduation credits, but they will not be able to count towards your major requirements.
