Tuition & Fellowships

Postdoctoral students select courses in a pre-registration system that is administered by the Postdoctoral Program office. Once all students have been assigned their courses, they register online.

Tuition and fees are set by the Graduate School of Arts and Science (GSAS). To find exact figures for the current or upcoming academic year, click on the link at the upper right, "Schedule of Tuition Fees" and then go to the link for the desired semester/year, then the link for "Graduates," and finally the link for "Graduate School of Arts and Science."  GSAS tuition and fees apply to the Postdoctoral Program.

Postdoctoral candidates are required to take two credits of coursework per semester.  In the Fall 2012 semester, the cost for two credits of coursework will be approximately $3401.

The Postdoctoral Program provides students with the opportunity to receive several varieties of scholarships/fellowships at different levels of training.

The Benjamin Wolstein Fellowship:
The Wolstein Fellowship is supported by funds generously bequeathed by the late Dr. Benjamin Wolstein for the financial assistance of outstanding candidates with demonstrated need as well as commitment to psychoanalytic research, scholarship and practice.  Candidates may request an application form from the Program office. Faculty may also nominate a candidate for a Fellowship award; however, the candidate must still fill out an application form. Questions about the Fellowship should be directed to Dr. Joyce Slochower or Dr. Elizabeth Goren.

Irving Harris Fellowship:
Thanks to the generous support of the Rosetta W. Harris Lead Charitable Trust, the NYU Postdoctoral Program in Psychotherapy & Psychoanalysis is able to provide financial assistance to a good number of candidates each year. The award is given to students based on academic and professional merit as well as economic need.  Because the cost of psychoanalytic training is so high, we urge ALL candidates who feel financial strain and have completed at least one semester of supervised analytic work with a clinic patient to apply. The application is simple and awards are determined by a faculty committee chaired by Dr. Joyce Slochower.

Diversity Fellowship:
This fellowship award has been established for the express purpose of supporting "individuals who are members of minority groups under-represented in the psychoanalytic profession and who will serve as role models for young people in populations that are under-served by the mental health field." The University has committed itself to matching these donations. For further information please contact the chair of the Diversity Fellowship Awards Committee Dr. Kirkland Vaughans, Dr. Janice Bennett, or Dr. Joyce Slochower.

NYU Matching Grant:
New York University provides matching grants based on several gifts provided by donors to the Program including the Harris Foundation. We use these matching funds to grant tuition credit to advanced students so as to help them move toward graduation. These finds are NOT available every semester, but rather are distributed in order of student seniority as we receive the funding. The Postdoctoral Office will notify students at the time of registration when such funds are available. No application is required as the funds are distributed in order of seniority.
