Exotic States of Matter Realized under Large Uniaxial Strain
In this talk I will do a brief review a new uniaxial strain technique to apply strain of ~0.5% pioneered by Clifford Hicks and Andrew Mackenzie. This technique has been shown to enhance the superconducting transition temperature of Sr2RuO4. We adopted this technique to the topological Kondo insulator SmB6 to enhance the surface conduction and the bandgap due to spacially separated 2+ and 3+ regions. Additionally, the technique is applied to a GaAs quantum well to observe the formation of a meta-stable state and stripe pahses around v=5/2.
