AGN Fueling and Feedback in Galaxies
Over the last 20 years, observations have revealed surprisingly tight correlations between the properties of galaxies and their supermassive black holes. AGN have emerged as key players in this coevolution of galaxies and supermassive black holes, by two primary mechanisms: AGN fueling and AGN feedback. Supermassive black holes build up mass by accreting gas during AGN fueling, while AGN feedback is a crucial regulator of star formation that controls the mass growth of the galaxies. I will present multiwavelength studies of both AGN fueling and feedback, using data from HST, Chandra, VLA, and Keck. In particular, I will discuss whether moderate luminosity AGN contribute to feedback, where in a galaxy merger AGN fueling occurs, and whether galaxy mergers preferentially fuel the most luminous AGN.
