The heart of Arts & Science is our faculty, which closely links undergraduate and graduate education with training and research.
Tenured faculty are responsible for designing curricula and teaching in both the College of Arts and Science (CAS) and the Graduate School of Arts and Science (GSAS). In this way, students at all levels have the opportunity to interact with leaders in their respective fields and to participate in their research.
Our 650 faculty members are organized into 28 departments, 23 programs and centers, and 14 research centers, where they conduct research in the humanities, social, natural, and physical sciences.
Arts & Science faculty have been awarded virtually every major academic prize and honor. Among our current faculty:
- ninety-eight have been named Guggenheim Fellows at some point in their careers;
- five have won the Pulitzer Prize;
- nine have been given MacArthur Fellowships;
- four have been appointed Howard Hughes Medical Institute Investigators; and
- three have won the National Medal of Science.
Teaching and research in the arts and sciences are at the core of any great university. The quality and reputation of our faculty has transformed NYU into a university nationally recognized for its excellence. |
