About Us

Welcome to Arts and Science at New York University.

Arts & Science is the intellectual core of New York University. It is also, by some distance, the largest academic unit at NYU.

Arts & Science has a rich and diverse academic organization. It is home to the oldest undergraduate (founded in 1832) and graduate school (founded in 1886) at NYU: the College of Arts and Science, and the Graduate School of Arts and Science. The College mounts virtually all the instruction for its own students as well as the general education curriculum for the entire University. The Graduate School provides doctoral level training central to the University’s research mission as well as professional level masters programs. The faculty is organized into 29 departments within three divisions (Humanities, Sciences, Social Sciences). Many of our faculty members, in addition to appointments in their home departments, hold joint, associated, and affiliated appointments with other Arts & Science departments or other schools at NYU.

Arts & Science is also home to NYU’s General Studies Program; 6 international houses (La Maison Francaise, Deutsches Haus, Casa Italiana Zerilli-Marimo, Glucksman Ireland House, Kevorkian Center of Near Eastern Studies, and King Juan Carlos I of Spain Center); and numerous centers and programs.

Our overriding priority is to build one of the truly great Arts and Science schools in the world. We are well on our way to achieving this goal. The migration of faculty and student talent in recent years to Arts and Science departments has been remarkable, and we are determined not just to maintain this momentum but accelerate it.

With the generous support of the NYU Board of Trustees, the Partners’ Initiative will increase the size of the faculty by approximately 20%, allowing us to add yet further distinction to an already extremely distinguished faculty, and these faculty will in turn be the magnets to attract the next generation of top students to NYU.   The Partners’ Initiative is also supporting a major, capital renovation program, which is adding to and renovating the academic space of our departments

There are many wonderful arts and science schools, but we believe that it is hard to match NYU, with its combination of teaching and research programs of enormous distinction, its location in the heart of the world’s most vibrant city, its commitment to making the intellectual and cultural life of New York City an integral part of the lives of students and faculty, and its unsurpassed international opportunities, both at the Square and at our sites abroad.
